FinOps
The Australian Digital Health Agency (ADHA) made the strategic decision to vacate Global Switch Ultimo (GSU) as part of the Home Affairs initiative to leave foreign owned data centre facilities. ADHA is responsible for the My Health Record (MHR) application that hosts health records for millions of Australians. MHR was migrated from GSU into Microsoft Azure. The architecture for MHR was designed with the principle of “like for like” due to the tight timeframes for delivering the project, which unfortunately left the Agency with limited time to modernise and optimise the solution from a cost perspective.

MJR gathered a team of cloud architects to lead the Agency’s Cloud Optimisation Program to investigate minimising Azure consumption costs by leveraging native Azure cloud capabilities and rearchitecting elements of the MHR system. MJR‘s mission was to deliver FinOps Capability services to facilitate ADHA increasing its digital literacy and strengthen integration between technological and operational areas. Our collaborative approach with an emphasises on frequent and continuous stakeholder engagement was leveraged to foster a relationship of coaching and knowledge sharing within the engagement.

MJR led and successfully delivered the Optimisation Program that reduced the Azure Consumption spend by 30% in 12 months. MJR consultants used their extensive cloud expertise and architectural skills to plan and develop savings measures.
MJR has substantial experience in developing secure cloud solutions and patterns. MJR delivered the Secure Internet Gateway (SIG) Pattern within the Australian Digital Health Agency (ADHA) to support the Datacentre Rehosting Project for the My Health Record (MHR) Application.

MJR were engaged by ADHA to provide a pattern and solution design for the Secure Internet Gateway (SIG) that was used by the My Health Record (MHR) application to provide secure connectivity between on-premises datacentres, Azure and the Internet.
​
MJR gathered a team of cloud architects to conduct a thorough assessment and comprehensive evaluation of the SIG requirements. They worked closely the Agency Cyber Security and ICT Architecture teams to gather functional and non-functional requirements. The MHR system contains the medical records of 30 million Australians, and the SIG was required to protect network traffic coming in and out of the MHR environment.

MJR developed an Architecture Pattern for the SIG leveraging a combination of Azure Platform as a Service (PaaS) technologies and Palo Alto Network Firewall Appliances to meet the Agency’s requirements and objectives. The pattern ensured it adhered to the Australian Government Information Security Manual (ISM) controls, Agency Cyber Security Policies and followed guidance and best practices outlined in Microsoft’s Cloud Adoption Framework (CAF).
The SIG pattern was fully endorsed by the Agency and provided a blueprint for the successful design and implementation of the SIG during the DCR Program.
